Horn, Michael - Math

This is my 11th year teaching 8th grade math at B.L. Gray. I am originally from the great state of Iowa and worked at Maytag as an accountant for 22 years prior to becoming a teacher. My wife, Deb, and I have two grown children and one grandchild - Jaidon. We came to the valley as a result of a job change with Maytag and have now lived as Texans for 14 years. In addition to Iowa and Texas, we have also lived in Jackson, Tennessee.
My educational background includes a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Iowa State University (Go Cyclones!) in Ames, Iowa and a Master's Degree in Business from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
Prior to completing my university education I served in the United States Air Force for nearly six years from 1977 to 1983. My military experience included a three year tour of duty in Germany.
As a child I grew up playing baseball and always loved the data involved in the game. Calculating batting averages and ERAs was fun for me and I am confident helped me become a stronger math student. I still follow the Baltimore Orioles to this day and I am ever hopeful that this will be the year they return to prominence in Major League baseball. Students will begin to get a feel for my love of baseball from Day 1 as seating arrangements on the first days of school will be by baseball numbers  on each student's desk.
My goals for this school year include the following:
1. 100% passing rate on the STAAR and EOC examinations
2. Better communication and involvement with parents to include weekly e-mail communication of happenings in the classroom
3. Have students fully prepared for higher level math
Please feel free to contact me either through a conference at school or via e-mail any time you have questions or concerns. I understand how busy you are so I will do my best to be flexible around your schedule. My phone number is (956)580-5333 ext. 1750. My conference hours are 8-8:54 in the morning.
I look forward to meeting all parents at our curriculum night (Tuesday, September 5th, 2017) and look forward to a great school year. Thank you in advance for all your support.
