Monica M. Blum has been teaching music to students for the past of 15 years: her 1st year at Kingsville ISD, then 2 years at La Joya High School, 5 years at Edinburg High School, 7 years of teaching at Sharyland North JH 4 as head band director, and is in her 1st year as assistant band director at B.L. Gray Junior High. Originally from San Benito, Texas, Monica Blum began her music career as a piano student in the 3rd grade and began playing clarinet in 6th grade at Miller Jordan Intermediate School.
A graduate of San Benito High School, Monica then attended Texas A&M University Kingsville where she studied clarinet under the tutelage of Dr. Nancy King-Sanders. While atttending college, Monica was a member of the Texas A&M University Kingsville Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Jazz Bands, chamber ensembles, clarinet choir,and choir. She also had the honor of performing with the Corpus Christi Wind Symphony on the Lexington 4 consecutive times. Monica also was an active member and officer of the Tau Beta Sigma sorority. Monica graduated in the fall of 2003 with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Performance. She then had the privilege of student teaching at Harlingen High School under Ronnie Rios and Maria Coronado in the Spring of 2004. After the completion of Monica's student teaching, she graduated with a 2nd Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education.
In the Fall of 2004, Monica began her teaching career at Kingsville ISD where she taught for 1 year. The following year Monica returned home to the Rio Grande Valley to teach at La Joya High School for 2 years, then Edinburg High School for 5 years. During this time Monica continued her education and recieved a Master in Music Degree in Music Education in the Spring of 2008 from Texas A&M University Kingsville. Monica is currently in her 8th year at Sharyland ISD and is currently assistant band director at B.L. Gray Junior High where she conducts the Concert Band, and Cadet Band, teaches beginner woodwinds at Hinojosa Elementary, Shimotsu Elementary, and assists the other bands at B.L. Gray Junior High.
Monica Blum is married and has a 10 year old daughter named Genevieve. She enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, cross stitch, cooking, drawing, playing the clarinet, and other various arts and crafts.
