Bass-baritone,
was born in Grant, Michigan, but has spent most of his life in Texas.
Timothy was raised in the border town of Eagle Pass, where his parents
taught at a Mexican Bible College. Due to this proximity to the Spanish
language and the fact that his parents were missionaries in Mexico,
Timothy is fluent in Spanish. He holds a bachelor's degree in voice and
Bible from Dallas Christian College (1985), and a Master's degree in
Religious Education (1991). After graduating from Dallas Christian
College, Timothy continued his vocal studies with Janice Warford in
Hobbs, New Mexico. While studying with Mrs. Warford, he entered into the
Wurlitzer Collegiate Artist competition and was the winner in the state
of New Mexico and a finalist in the Southwest US Regional competition
(1988). Watkins was a member of the prestigious Sängerrunde German choir
in Austin before moving to the Valley in 1994. Mr. Watkins has been the
bass soloist in performances of:
- Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (with the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale)
- Casals' "El Pessebre" (with the Valley Symphony Orchestra & Chorale)
- Complete cycle of Vaughan-Williams’ “Songs of Travel”
- Dubois’ “The Seven Last Words of Christ”
- Vaughan Williams' "Hodie"
- Saint-Sans’ “Christmas Cantata”
- Bach's cantata #140
- Mendelssohn's "Elijah"
- and numerous productions of Handel's "Messiah"
- he has appeared as Balthazar in Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors"
- and most recently played the part of the Armored Man in Mozart's "The Magic Flute"
Watkins
has sung with the Southwest Symphony Chorus (Hobbs, NM), Little
Traverse Bay Symphony Chorus (Petosky, MI) and the Valley Symphony
Chorale (McAllen, TX) as a member of the chorus and a bass soloist.
Timothy
is an avid bicyclist. "I love being outside and biking lets me do
that. I like the exercise it affords (definitely helps in breathing
techniques, which are necessary in singing), and I also love the sound
of the tires on the pavement as I'm flying down the road 20 mph and
more." In the summer of 2013 Tim started his biking endeavors. To date he has biked over 40,000 miles.
Timothy has served as the choir director in Sharyland since the 1997-1998 school year. He is married and has four children.
